Image to embroidery
Convert an image into an embroidery file
Upload an image and InstaEmbroid converts it into real stitches, not just a renamed picture: fill, satin and running stitches with underlay, sized for your hoop and saved in your machine's format.
Updated
- Images in
- JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF
- Files out
- PES, JEF, DST, EXP, VP3, XXX
- Colours
- 1 to 32 threads, matched to a real thread chart
- Also included
- A printable thread sheet with every colour in sewing order
How it works
- Add your picture Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF. Pick what it shows (a pet, a face, a logo, text…) and the settings are tuned for it.
- Pick your machine and hoop Choose your machine and hoop; the design is sized to fit and saved in the format your machine reads.
- Match real threads Every colour is matched to a real spool from your thread brand, with its number. Change any of them.
- Watch it sew, then download See every stitch build up on screen, check the stitch count and time, then download the file.
Why you can't just rename the file
A JPG or PNG stores pixels. An embroidery file stores stitches: where the needle goes down, where the thread changes and where to trim. Converting means planning thousands of stitches, so a converter that only changes the file extension gives you a file the machine can't use.
InstaEmbroid digitizes the image properly: it picks the thread colours, decides the stitch type and angle for every shape, adds underlay and pull compensation, and orders the shapes so the machine travels as little as possible.
Pick your format

Images that convert best
- Bold, flat colours with clear edges: logos, cartoons, clip art, stickers and simple drawings.
- A PNG with a transparent background: the background is left unstitched.
- At least 500 pixels across. Bigger is fine; tiny, blurry images lose their edges.
- Photos work too, with a simplified, poster-like look. See photo to embroidery for tips.
Questions
Can I convert a PNG to PES or a JPG to DST?
Yes. Any JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF can become any of the six formats, and you can download all six at once in a zip that counts as one design.
Is it free?
Previews are free and unlimited, and the Free plan downloads 3 designs a week in every format. New accounts get every feature, the AI photo tools included, free for their first week, with no card needed.
How big can the design be?
As big as your machine's largest hoop. Pick your model and hoop, and the studio sizes the design to fit, or set the width and height yourself.
Will my machine show the right colours?
PES, JEF, VP3 and XXX store colours, so the machine shows them. DST and EXP only store colour changes, so follow the thread sheet that comes with the download.
