JPG and PNG to PES
Turn a JPG or PNG into a PES embroidery file
Upload a picture and InstaEmbroid digitizes it into fill, satin and running stitches, sized for your hoop and saved as a .PES for Brother and Baby Lock machines, and many newer Singer models. No software to install.
- Pictures in
- JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF
- File out
- .PES, with thread colours
- Read by
- Brother and Baby Lock machines, and many newer Singer models
- Also included
- Every other format and a printable thread sheet
How it works
- Add your picture Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF. Bold, flat colours and clear outlines stitch best, and a PNG with a transparent background leaves the background unstitched.
- Pick your machine and hoop Choose your machine and hoop and the design is sized to fit, with its stitch speed and format set.
- Match real threads Every colour is matched to a real spool from your thread brand, with its number. Change any of them.
- Preview and download Watch every stitch sew out on screen, then download the .PES and copy it to your machine.
What is a PES file?
PES is Brother's embroidery format. Every current Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machine reads it, from 4x4 in starter machines to 10-needle shop machines, and so do many newer Singer models.
Each thread is saved as the nearest colour in Brother's thread chart, so the machine shows a colour it knows. If you sew with another brand, follow the thread list from the studio.
Tips
- Brother and Baby Lock home machines accept up to about 125 colour changes per design. InstaEmbroid keeps designs to 32 colours, well inside that.
- Size the design for the hoop you own: a 4x4 in machine won't open a design made for a 5x7 hoop.
- Photos have thousands of shades, so they come out simplified and poster-like. Cartoons, logos and drawings give the cleanest results.

Questions
Can I convert a JPG to PES for free?
Yes. Previews are free and unlimited, and the Free plan includes 3 downloads a week in every format, PES included. New accounts also get every feature free for their first week.
Can I convert a PNG to PES too?
Yes. The studio takes JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP or GIF pictures. A PNG with a transparent background is ideal: the background isn't stitched.
Do I need PE-Design or other software to turn a JPG into a PES?
No. InstaEmbroid digitizes the picture in your browser and writes the PES file itself, so there's nothing to install.
Which Brother machines can open the file?
Any Brother or Baby Lock embroidery machine, as long as the design fits its hoop. Pick your model in the studio and the design is sized for it.
